Throughout life, one thing is for certain…nothing ever stays the same. According to the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, “ The only thing that is constant is change.” We are constantly changing, evolving and growing. Sometimes we rise, sometimes we fall. Our hearts can be full of joy and happiness one moment, then broken and sorrowful the next. Developing skills to embrace these emotional roller coasters can prove difficult if not equipped with the proper means to cope with whatever life throws our way. It’s essential to take control of what you can and let go of the rest. The Serenity Prayer often helps put things into perspective in times of uncertainty and despair. It is a great reminder during a life storm. “God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, have the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.”
Other effective coping skills include: embracing emotions, properly planning for changes you are aware of, take mini-breaks and allow yourself to breathe, take care of yourself by getting adequate rest, nutrition and exercise, reach out for help from loved ones and/or professionals, develop a plan of action and step onto the bridge of healing with dignity and grace.
It is important to remember you are not alone. Everyone has experienced hardship and stress during life changes. Surround yourself with positivity and this time too shall pass.
